Neatly cut hedges lining a path in Weston, England

What hedge work do you do?

  • Trims: straight tops and clean sides on hedges that are already in shape
  • Reductions: bringing an overgrown hedge back down in height and width
  • Shaping: box, yew, privet, laurel and other garden hedges
  • Clearing up: every cutting raked out of borders and lawns and taken away

Light comes back into the room. The path is wide enough to walk down again. Your neighbour stops mentioning the hedge.

Can hedges be cut during nesting season?

Garden hedges can be cut, but the law protects nests. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1 makes it an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while that nest is in use or being built. We check every hedge before we start, and if we find an active nest we leave that section until the birds have gone.

What if a neighbour's hedge is too high?

The Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003, Part 8 gives councils powers to deal with complaints about high hedges. Under the Act, a high hedge is a line of two or more mainly evergreen or semi-evergreen trees or shrubs rising more than two metres above ground level. The council expects neighbours to try to settle the problem between themselves first. If the hedge is yours, a height reduction is often the quickest way to end the argument.

How much does hedge trimming cost?

Price depends on the length, height and type of hedge, and whether it needs a trim or a reduction. Send photos, ideally with someone standing next to the hedge for scale, and we'll reply with a fixed price.

Questions about hedge trimming

How often should a hedge be trimmed?

Most garden hedges look their best with one or two trims a year. Fast growers such as privet and leylandii often need more. We can add hedge trims to regular maintenance visits so you never have to remember.

Do you take the hedge cuttings away?

Yes. We rake the cuttings out of beds and lawns, bag them and take them away.

Can you cut tall hedges?

Tell us the rough height on the form and send a photo. We'll tell you what we can do when we send the price.
